Oscar De La Hoya

Oscar De La Hoya is an ultimate overachiever. He is the only six-time champion, he has defeated seventeen world champions, and has already beaten two all time greats (Pernell Whitaker and Julio Cesar Chavez). Oscar De La Hoya won gold in the 1992 Olympics. Their was serious talk of a title shot in his pro debut and Oscar appeared on the cover of Ring Magazine after his third fight! De La Hoya received a title shot against anonymous Danish title holder Jimmi Bredhal. "The Golden Boy" stopped Bredhal in the tenth round to gain his first title belt (as a super-featherweight). After one successful defense, Oscar moved up to compete as a lightweight. In his lightweight debut, Oscar got a shot at future hall of famer Jorge Paez. Oscar took Paez out in two to gain the vacant WBO lightweight title. After three title defenses he took on murderous punching Rafael Ruelas to unify the lightweight title. Oscar De La Hoya shocked everyone by taking Ruelas out in two rounds in his first huge fight. Soon after two more easy title defenses Oscar took on Mexico's favorite son, Julio Cesar Chavez. De La Hoya humiliated Chavez stopping him on cuts at the end of the fourth to win his third title. After an easy title defense against Miguel Angel Gonzalez, De La Hoya went after his fourth title against another all time great Pernell Whitaker. "The Golden Boy" had a rough time but still won his fourth title with a unanimous decision. After seven successful defenses he agreed to unify the title in a fight called "The fight of the Millennium" versus undefeated Puerto Rican Superstar Felix "Tito" Trinidad. After dominating "Tito" for most of the first nine rounds, Oscar mad his fatal mistake to throw away the last three rounds against Trinidad and lost a controversial decision. After regaining the title Felix left vacant, he lost again to another great fighter, "Sugar" Shane Mosley. Then he took on boxing's human highlight machine Arturo Gatti after a long lay-off. He tore up Arturo and once again moved up trying to become the third five time champion against Javier Castillejo. De La Hoya looked terrific and soon after took on the ferocious one Fernando Vargas. Oscar kayoed Vargas in his greatest outing. After his humiliation of Yory Boy Campas he lost again to Shane Mosley in a very controversial decision. Then "The Golden Boy" made history in becoming the first six time champion when he defeated Felix Sturm for the WBO Middleweight championship. In his second outing as a middleweight he was knocked out for the first time against the bigger Bernard Hopkins. Then in May of 2006, De La Hoya returned in tremendous form, stopping wild but dangerous Ricardo Mayorga in six. And although De La Hoya dropped a split decision against pound for pound kingpin, Floyd Mayweather, this has done nothing to diminish his respected image.
