Former Super Featherweight and Lightweight kingpin Diego "Chico" Corrales brings a truckload of power in each fist. Pound for Pound probably the top five biggest punchers today. Diego won his first title against a very skilled fighter named Roberto Garcia who was favored to put the first mark on Corrales's undefeated record. Corrales's limited experience played against him in the early rounds but eventually dethroned the undefeated champion in the seventh round. After making four successful title defenses Corrales -ready to move up in weight- decided to take on the undefeated future boxing pound for pound king "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr. There was bad blood between the two and as it turned out Corrales was completely overmatched by Floyd and his step dad jumped into the ring after the fifth knockdown Corrales received. After that Corrales took a two year layoff but returned on top until that is Diego collided with Joel Casamayor. Corrales had his moments knocking Joel down once and almost stopping him in the fifth. The fight was stopped (for Corrales) after dangerous cuts in the mouth and after suffering two knockdowns. 2004 was a big year for Diego, avenging his loss to Casamayor and kayoing previously unbeaten Acelino Freitas to capture the WBO Lightweight title. Then May 7th 2005 Diego Corrales went to unify the lightweight title with WBC lightweight kingpin Jose Luis Castillo. The two slugged it out for 9 rounds until the unbelievable finale in the tenth. Castillo came out strong in the tenth knocking down Diego twice before succumbing to a spectacular barrage that finished Castillo. The two had a rematch with Castillo evening the score with a fourth round kayo. After Castillo ruined a rubber match with Corrales by failing to make weight, Corrales lost his title to rival Joel Casamayor in a minor upset in October 2006. Corrales passed away via motor cycle accident May 7th, 2007. |
